FDA Approves New Diabetes Drug

new diabetes drugThe FDA approved Invokana (canagliflozin) for people with type 2 diabetes today to help control blood sugar levels.

Invokana is the first of it’s kind in a brand new class of diabetes medications, the sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors or SGLT2’s.

The most common side effects of Invokana are vaginal yeast infections and urinary tract infections.

Drugs in this class work inside your kidneys by blocking these SGLTs (glucose transporters) from reabsorbing the glucose and instead glucose is excreted in the urine.

Think of this as a detour.

Instead of the sugar going back into your bloodstream it goes into your bladder and is excreted in the urine.
