Is Gymnema Sylvestre One of the Best Herbs for Diabetes?

gymnema sylvestreIf you’re like me, I’m sure you’ve heard of numerous natural remedies for diabetes. In fact, there are so many popping up left and right, it’s hard to know which ones are the real deal.

But did you know that gymnema sylvestre has been shown to be one of the most powerful herbs for diabetes when it comes to naturally controlling blood sugar?

In general, with any herb, the more widely it has been studies the better. And many of the physicians that I work with have never heard of gymnema sylvestre. However, there are some studies that point to the benefits of using it for type 2 diabetes.

Gymnema Sylvestre Explained

Gymnema sylvestre is an herb that has been used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for almost two thousand years as a natural treatment for diabetes. It is considered to be one of the most powerful of all herbs for improving blood sugar. And it contains a group of gymnemic acids that together all have antidiabetic effects.

This herb has been shown to improve glucose uptake (help to get sugar into your cells and out of your bloodstream), and prevent the liver from producing glucose. This is a problem which affects type 2 diabetics because the body is tricked to believe it is in a starving state due to insulin resistance, and the cells can’t get the sugar they need for energy. So the liver produces glucose.

Another benefit of this gymnema sylvestre is that it has been shown in studies to increase insulin levels, by increasing insulin secretion from the beta cells of the pancreas. This was when used at 400 mg per day of the gymnema leaves. This was in part due to the herbs ability to regenerate beta cells of the pancreas that secrete insulin. This is significant because type 2 diabetics have lost about 50-70% of their beta cell mass. While on the other hand, type 1 diabetics have lost just about all of their beta cell mass.

In another small study, gymnema sylvestre was shown to reduce A1C levels from 12% to 8.5% in patients with type 2 diabetes. One thing that is important to note, is that gymnema sylvestre must be used with caution when used with other medications because it can cause hypoglycemia (your blood sugar drops low).

For best results be sure to use the kind that has been grown organically and tested. The recommended amount of gymnema sylvestre is 300-400 mg per day of a standardized extract.
